Spiritual Retreat
Traditional spiritual retreat
Retreat for rest and creative purposes
Teachers and students alike can experience how difficult it is to take time off from often well-attentioned friends and family. Paradoxically, it is even more difficult to step away from messages on cell phones, social media, and robot calls. They all call for our attentionon trivial matters, incessantly.
Those who take vows as monks or nuns in the Buddhist or Christian traditions, have their cells where they can retire, so they can be present to themselves and to Reality: For us who live a spiritually-oriented life, in a non-religious environment, we need even more a quiet place outside our home, where we can experience real solitude and silence. We need to leave behind the familiar, our physical, family and social environment, so we have the opportunity to find a self that is not dependent on others’ definitions and expectations.
Ibn Arabi defines the silent solitary retreat as an intimate meeting with oneself. Those who experience this kind of retreat for one to three days can experience the sweetness or it: Moods and habits of thinking such as worries, urges, ruminations, fade.
As retreatants rest in the territory of silence, their heart expand and become ready to receive what they need: contentment, joy, awe. Furthermore Ibn Arabī states that ‘whoever makes seclusion their practice grasps the mystery of the divine unity,’ It gives them the time and space for contemplation of the Divine qualities, or Divine Names. They can experience themselves as loci of manifestations of these qualities and become intimate with the Only Reality.
