Lecture: Rumi and creativity - April 25, 2023
“I live my life in expanding circles’ said Rilke
Researchers studying creativity have found that different techniques such as psychological distance, absurdist stimulation, combining opposites and more, increase our creative potential. When we participate to the workshop “Writing with Rumi” we experience similar effects. The creative moment is a moment beyond the ego. We experience a shift from the personal realm -the ego- to the imaginal world, the world of symbols and archetype, where true inspiration is born.
Dr Annick Safken wrote her Ph.D. on the effects of Rumi’s poetry on students who actively listen to the poems and make them relevant to their lives. When men and women, who have been moved by Rumi’s poetry meet in the circle Writing with Rumi, they imagine and write a response to these poems as if Rumi was their friendly living teacher. They find out that these poems are pulling them out their habitual way of thinking and discover their deeper concerns and joy.
Dr Safken will present the highlights of the current research on creativity. She will introduce the participants to poems that have the same effects as the techniques used by educators interested in creativity have designed.
The participants will receive the zoom link the day of the event. On zoom (Free)

Writing with Rumi - May 2, 2023
Rumi poems are expressions of his spiritual journey. Fully aware of what was happening, he was able to describe the transformations of his consciousness from the lower to the higher states.
The workshop will provide a safe environment where you can explore, acknowledge and witness your deepest desires and struggles. As you read your responses you will see how the poems have connected you to the core of your being, your inner heart. This connection is enhanced by a special mode of feedback we have developed, that respect and honor the deep truth of each person.
on zoom at 12 pm MST
The event is offered on Eventbrite for a fee. Donations are always appreciated but if you register directly by email to ecospiritcenter@gmail.com

Groups retreats: Conversations with the Great Mystics: Fall 2023
Conversations with Heschel
The Conversations with Abraham Joshua Heschel offer participants the opportunity to explore the wisdom of Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel, 20th century Jewish mystic and activist. His writings continue to warm the hearts and challenge the thoughts of many.
The Friday evening lecture will present the broad spectrum of Heschel’s life and writings.
During the Saturday workshop we will use the Deep Self-Discovery Method developed and taught by Dr. Safken since 2007. This method allows the participants to engage fully with the mystical writings, as if the Teacher was present among them and talking to them, personally
The “Conversations with Meister Eckhart”
offer participants the opportunity to take a
little break from their active lives, refresh their heart and renew their soul through contemplation of some deeply
nourishing spiritual truths as presented in
the writings of Meister Eckhart.
The Friday evening lecture will present a guided reflection on the biography of the medieval philosopher-poet-mystic Meister Eckhart, including some short passages from his mystical writings.
During the Saturday writing workshop, we will use the Deep Self-Discovery Method to engage more deeply with selections from Meister Eckhart’s poetry and sermons.
The “Conversations with Ibn ‘Arabi” provide opportunities to engage in a process of discovering, witnessing and realizing the Ultimate Reality in ourselves.
Ibn Arabi wants each of us to become one of those who pay close attention to the unfolding of their own spiritual experiences, and awaken in us the need of verifying, through our life experiences, our divine origin and purpose.
The Saturday evening lecture will introduce you to Ibn Arabi’s writings using a specific contemplative reading approach learned from Sufi teachers.
During the Sunday writing workshop we will engage deeper with Ibn Arabi descriptions of spiritual experiences. Prompts will be provided, in order to help you to write your responses to his writings at the light of your personal experiences
About the Conversations with the Great Mystics
In modern language the term “conversation” has a very limited meaning, i.e. an exchange of words between two (or more) persons. We don’t always pay attention to the quality of our attention and presence in these conversations.
However, if we look at the etymology of the word, it literally means turning around (com+vertere), turning toward the other person. In old English the term meant “living together, having dealings with others,” and brought the ideas of intimacy and authentic relationship.
The purpose of our regular meetings, lectures and workshops is being acquainted and more intimate with the mystics who wanted to experience the ONE directly.. It is about being more intimate with yourself and the Divine at the same time. In Sufism the term used is “Sohbet,” which brings also the ideas of closeness between friends.
